HUCKABEE STANDS DOWN- FINALLY!

It’s been a month since the February 5th Super Tuesday contest in which the Republican Party leaned heavily toward Arizona Senator John McCain. The results prompted GOP powerhouse and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to withdraw from the race in the interest of party unity. Not so Mike Huckabee.

For reasons known only to himself, the former Arkansas Governor decided to remain in the race even after it became mathematically impossible for him to win the nomination. While he may have considered himself a Dark Horse, virtually everyone else viewed him as a non-entity who was drawing marginal support away from McCain.

But today Huckabee finally conceded defeat and withdrew from the race. The Republican nomination, which has been McCain’s for weeks, is now officially undisputed. “The most important race begins,” said McCain. “It’s a very humbling thing, and I say that with all sincerity.”

Tomorrow McCain will visit with President Bush in the White House where he is expected to receive the president’s official endorsement. After a lunch Bush and McCain are expected to appear together before the press in the Rose Garden.

The time has come for Republicans to get behind McCain with all of the passion and enthusiasm that we are capable. While many of us may have our differences with Senator McCain on various issues, let us always remember his integrity, intelligence, and years of service in the military and in the beltway. As those in the opposing party still squabble among themselves over Hilbama, the GOP is united behind a proven leader- John McCain.
